TRANSPORTATION PERMITS

California Vehicle Code, Division 15, Chapter 5, Article 6 authorizes local authorities, with respect to highways under their respective jurisdictions, may, at their discretion upon application and if good cause appears, issue a special permit for transportation for vehicles or loads exceeding the maximum allowable California Vehicle Code (CVC) dimensions (width - 8.5 feet, length,- 40 feet,  height - 14 feet).

The purpose of issuing the permit is to ensure appropriate routes are used, based upon the Pinole Municipal Code 10.48
, and to keep track of large vehicles which may damage City of Pinole infrastructure / facilities.

To apply for and obtain a transportation permit, provide the following:


  • Transportation Permit Application - complete the application and submit to [email protected].  Include a copy of the Caltrans permit covering the load arriving in Pinole.
  • Provide a copy of your insurance certificate with your permit application.  Sample Insurance Certificates are available for reference only.
  • Fees - $16.00 each trip or $90.00 for an annual permit.  Variance permits are charged time and materials per hour.  Utilize the credit card authorization form to pay the required fee.
  • Review Time - Approved, conditionally approved, or denied typically within 3 working days.  Keep in mind our offices are closed on Fridays.

PENALTIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE

(a) Any person convicted of transporting an extralegal load on a highway, or causing or directing the operation of or driving on a highway any vehicle or combination of vehicles for which a permit is required pursuant to this article, without having obtained a permit issued in accordance with this article, shall be punished by a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars ($500) or by imprisonment in the county jail for a period not exceeding six months, or by both that fine and imprisonment.

 

(b) If the violation involves excess weight, an additional fine shall be levied as specified in Section 42030 on the amount of weight in excess of that authorized pursuant to this chapter.
